Happy New Year!

I hope you all have a fabulous New Year's! My husband and I are having some of our nearest and dearest over for appetizers and drinks.
2008 has been a year full of blessings for me. I finished my master's, I celebrated my one year wedding anniversary, I enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and I managed to find a job after graduation. 2009 is going to bring lots of changes for me, but I am so excited. My hope is that I will take the time to slow down and enjoy my next year. I want to savor every second. I hope that you all have a fabulous New Year's and a blessed 2009!

Graduation!

I was so excited to graduate!! My graduation was first thing in the morning and afterwards we went to lunch at Green Valley Grill. GVG has delicious food. It is where my mom's friends hosted my bridesmaids luncheon, and my husband and I stayed at the adjoining hotel on our wedding night. My parents then had a party for me that night. All of the festivities were in Greensboro, my hometown.

Here I am with my maternal grandparents. They have been such a huge support to me, and I was so blessed that they were able to celebrate with us.

My mom and my sister surprised me with a beautiful new pearl necklace from Schiffman's. Up until now, I haven't had a real pearl necklace. These pearls have a beautiful pink sheen to them. They are beautiful and I have loved wearing them.

The party was so much fun. I am going to post pictures and recipes as soon as I upload the pictures from my mom's camera. We made several of Ina Garten's appetizer recipes and they did not disappoint.

I will check back in soon. Have a great day!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! My husband and I enjoyed spending time with our families over the holiday. We ate tons of yummy food and played lots of rock band with my family. It was nice to see everyone, but we missed my aunt, uncle, and cousin who live in the mountains. My cousin works at the hospital and was on call, so they couldn't come. We are going to get together soon and celebrate the holiday. My husband bought me some of the cutest gifts this year. He surprised me with the Herend Dancing Elephant. I love the raspberry fishnet Herend, and I thought the elephant was adorable. He also bought me the Louis Vuitton case for my iphone. I have the Neverful bag, so it fits onto a clip inside my bag.

My sister Adelaide bought me this cute pink and green frame for my desk. I love it!

I got a few other fun gifts, but mainly I was given money this year. It was for the best though because I am in the process of buying new clothes for work.

I hope you all have a nice weekend!

Six Random Facts

I was tagged by Lulu at Dirty Martini Diaries about a month ago and I am just now posting. Shame on me!

Rules:

1. Link to the person that tagged you
2. Post the rules on your blog
3. Share six non-important things/habits/quirks about yourself
4. Tag six random people at the end of your post by linking to their blogs
5. Let each random person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their website.
6. Let your tagger know when your entry is UP

Six Random Facts:

1. I am quite the caffeine addict. I need at least 2-3 cups of coffee each morning to get going.

2. I am not a morning person. I need awhile to wake up before I want to talk and start my day.

3. I can justify spending a lot of money of clothing, shoes, or handbags. But, I clip coupons and try to save money at the grocery store. If Harris Teeter is doing triple coupons, I am there.

4. I have hypoglycemia, so I can't skip meals.

5. I like to make lists. Anything that needs to be done I will list according to importance. This way, I focus on one thing and then then next.

6. Right now my house is a disaster. I want to have everything clean and organized by the time I start work (January 5).

I tag anyone who want to play. I hope you all have a great weekend!

Merry Christmas!

I hope you all have a Very Merry Christmas! My graduation and the graduation party went well and were so much fun! I am going to post some pictures and recipes soon. Things have been going great, I have just been trying to do a months worth of Christmas preparation in a few days. I am taking a short blogging break and will be back soon!

Luke 2: 8-14 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Lilly Pulitzer Dog Collar!

I was perusing LillyPulitzer.com and came across this adorable Lilly dog collar!! My dog Chi Chi had an allergic reaction to one of her vaccinations yesterday. She got really itchy, broke out in hives, and her face became really swollen. It was so scary and happened in about five minutes. I rushed her back over to the vet and she spent the afternoon there getting steroids. Between that and her sprained leg last week, I think Chi Chi deserves a Lilly collar from Santa. :)

Christmas Wish List

I have everything that I could possibly ever need, but there are a few special treats I have been coveting.

These mint julep cups in Vera Wang's Grosgrain pattern for Wedgwood are so pretty.

I would like to have a large pink and green Scout bag to use for groceries.

I know several people who love the Kate Spade desk calendar. Even though I can use my iPhone, I still like to have a seperate calendar.

I have loved this desk calendar from Donovan Designs via The Paper Cafe ever since MMM posted about it. I think it would be so cute on my new desk at work.

These recipe cards from Monogram Chick are right up my alley - monogrammed, pink, and green! Perfection!! She isn't processing any more orders until the first of the year, but they would still be fun as a New Year's treat.

If you would like to view my recipe book, either leave a comment or send me an email at southernnewlywed@aol.com and I will send you an invite.

Enjoy your week!

Yes, I pretty much listen to Christmas music all year! One of my fave non-traditional songs is Darlene Love singing "Christmas, Baby Please Come Home"... Letterman usually has her on just to sing this song. It is fabulous! Mariah Carey does a great job with it, too. As far as Traditional Carols go - I love all of them!! Great giveaway.

Quick Rice Pilaf and Pork Chops

I meant to share this rice pilaf recipe several weeks ago and forgot. I concocted this several weeks ago and it turned out quite well. It is quick and easy. I made it the other night with pork chops.

Rice Pilaf

Ingredients:
1 onion
1-2 tablespoons of butter or olive oil
3/4 cup of brown rice
1 can of chicken broth (I use low sodium)
handful of frozen green peas

Directions:
Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and saute for about 5 minutes. Add rice and chicken broth. Bring to a boil and then lower heat and simmer for about 25 minutes. During the last 5 minutes, add frozen peas.

Dijon and Italian Breadcrumb Crusted Pork Chops

Ingredients:
Pork chops (bone in, boneless, whatever you have)
Bread Crumbs (whatever you have, Italian, garlic, plain)
Dijon Mustard

Directions:
Rub the pork chops with Dijon mustard all over. Dredge in breadcrumbs and place in baking dish. Top with a small amount of olive oil and bake at 350 degrees until done. It usually takes mine about 20-25 minutes to cook.

I hope you all enjoy your week!

Shrimp and Grits

I made this recipe Tuesday night. It isn't exactly the healthiest dish I have ever made, but it is delicious nonetheless. If you aren't familiar with grits, they are simply ground corn sort of like polenta.

Ingredients:
2 cups milk
2 cups cream
salt and pepper
1 cup grits (not instant or quick cooking)
3 tablespoons butter
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar
1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
4 slices bacon, chopped
4 teaspoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
1 cup thinly sliced scallions
1 large garlic clove, minced

Directions:

Bring milk and cream to a boil. Add grits, salt, and pepper, and simmer until the liquid is absorbed, stirring occasionally, about 15-25 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in butter and cheese.

Fry the bacon in a large skillet until browned. Remove from skillet and drain well. In grease, add shrimp and cook until the shrimp turn pink. Add the lemon juice, bacon, parsley, scallions, and garlic. Saute for 3 minutes.

Spoon grits into plate and add shrimp mixture on top. Serve immediately.
